Jane-called-Alice pressed a hand against the mirror, and, for a moment imagined flesh instead of glass, a teasing smile instead of red-rimmed eyes. Swapping had meant to be a game, a way to score private points against all who confused them, a way to exchange lives at a whim. But now fate had proved more whimsical than they, and she was both alone and stuck Jane-called-Alice.

Three sentences is difficult indeed.
